SS-Panzer-Abt. 501 Battle of the Bulge »Part 4
Tiger II - #312
Commander: SS-Oberscharführer Heinrich Ritter
Movement profile:
12/16/1944: Way through Tondorf sound village in the afternoon, on the way to the front. Other destiny unknown. Presumably by a later application (12/30/1944) in the space of Bastogne with Goronne shot. Tiger was provided in the meantime with a white winter camouflage.
Tiger II - #332
Commander: SS-Unterscharführer Otto Blase
Movement profile:
12/16/1944: Way through Tondorf sound village in the afternoon, on the way to the front.
12/16/1944 – 12/18/1944: March about sound village, Tondorf, Losheim, Lanzerath, Buchholz, Honsfeld, Büllingen, Moderscheid, Thirimont, Baugnez, Ligneuville, Lodomez, Stavelot. The other route or the temporal sequence is unsettled / incomprehensible till this day.
12/25/1944: In the morning of the 12/25/1944 332 on the N33 drives direction La Gleize at the rate of Coo beasts (between Coo and Trois Ponts) to establish contact with Peiper presumably again. Because at that time neither the bridge in Stavelot (spraying), nor small with Petit-Spai (this would have been too weak anyhow!) were intact, only 2 possibilities remain, actually, why 332 could be at that time at this place: A) 332 had already come before the 12/20/1944 by Stavelot (SS-Hauptsturmführer Heinz Birnschein speaks of the fact that 2-4 tigers of his 3rd company had created it to La Gleize) and had during the days from the 12/20/1944 the job to keep the N33, or to produce the connection with the Ferme Antoine. Therefore 332 would have been from the outset with the point Peiper in La Gleize.
B) 332 has got in an act of an individual to wade the Ambleve (in reverse direction to 132) with Petit-Spai and to produce thus the connection with Peiper in La Gleize, although the outbreak order was already known at this time.
However, there is not a real explanation!
At the same time the points of the 740th US-Panzer-Battallions the N33 on 332 driven come from La Gleize. The first Sherman (sergeant Glenn George) is deprived 332 immediately under fire. Nevertheless, one had used up no armoured shell, but a hey-shell (phosphorus) which meets 332 on the right upper corner of the front record (see picture of 332 on follower). The occupying thinks on it there that of 332 fires has caught and takes ashore. Under mg fire they manage the escape. Further details are not known.
12/26/1944: 463. Ordnance Evacuation company of the 1st US army discovers 332 and leaves mountain device arrival. 332 is fully driving-competent at this time, however, his chains on the ground have frozen. Hence, small petrol fires are lighted in the chains. Then 332 from own strength on the small street Coo-Biester-Ster is driven to Stavelot. There he is pulled on the low loader and in the direction of spa (railway station) taken away what lasts on account of many burst tyres of the clearly florid low loader up to the 12/28/1944. Then in spa he is unloaded in the railway station and stops up to February, 1945 there. Then an O.T.I.T takes over. (Ordnance Technical Inspection team) the evacuation over Antwerp to Maryland to Aberdeen Proving Ground (military test area) where he comes in summer, 1945. 332 is tested extensively and end him of 40th is spent in the museum there. There the left side of the tower and the tub is cut open. Unfortunately, 332 becomes several times anew varnishes and the original colours get lost. Then in 1991 he is brought in the Patton museum in fort Knox where he is open to the public still today.

Tiger II - #334
Commander: unknown
Movement profile:
12/16/1944: Way through Tondorf sound village in the afternoon, on the way to the front.
12/16/1944 – 12/18/1944: March about sound village, Tondorf, Losheim, Lanzerath, Buchholz, Honsfeld, Büllingen, Moderscheid, Thirimont, Baugnez, Ligneuville, Lodomez, Stavelot.
12/18/1944: About midday / afternoon arrival in La Gleize (3rd company).
12/19/1944: SS-main storm leader Heinz Birnschein lets to 334 with 2-3 tanks IV directions Borgoumont clear up “Les Tcheous” and take a protection position. No contact with the enemy is announced.
12/22/1944: The Taskforce-McGeorge attacks with several tanks and infantry the outpost in “Les Tcheous”. Besides, 334 shoots a Sherman and is shot at the same time movement-incapable, because a shell strains the right chain and the Treibrad or the Vorgelege. Hence, 334 is given up. At the clearing work 334 is sprinkled, pushed the slope down and scrapped later. Thanks to a witness's statement is proved that of 334 red figures with white border had what disproves among other things the clear “sartorial theory” of the different figure colours of 501.!
